In my opinion ANYTHING with Judd Apatow's name attached to it is a MUST SEE. I normally don't really like a lot of comedies because so many of them aren't genuinely funny and use bathroom and sexual humor for laughs. However there is something about the films that Judd Apatow produces that are just so fresh. You can't help but laugh yourself silly. Yes they still have that aspect of humor I don't really appreciate but there is something about his films that make me love them. Maybe it's the fresh faces he uses in his films. However now the actors have received so much press they aren't as fresh as they used to be. Not only is Judd Apatow's name attached to the film as a producer but Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg are the screenwriters. If you saw Superbad, then you know that those two rightfully earn the title as GENIUS' when it comes to writing a screenplay. It still amazes me to this very day that Evan and Seth started the screenplay for Superbad when they were only thirteen.
On to Pineapple Express... first off I will go ahead and say I missed the beginning of the movie. See I am a month away from being able to see R movies legally. However for right now I rely on sneaking in to see them. However my friends and I were so eager to see this movie that we kinda forgot the whole secret to sneaking in. See we of course buy the ticket for the movie... by way of the kiosk. That way it looks like we are old enough and they don't Id us when we buy the ticket. We aren't badass to the point of buying another ticket for another movie and then getting in to the movie. Anyways Pineapple Express has been out for a little more than a week. If you want to perfect the art of sneaking in. Choose to see the movie A GOOD MONTH after it comes out. Because at that point the employees figure that everyone who wanted to see it has seen it and therefore there is no need to look at your Id. However we kinda forgot that aspect. Plus we figured we were okay because it was a weekday. Not only that but a majority of the schools where I live are back in session. My school starts later than the rest. So you would think since school was in and it was a school night kids wouldn't be at the movies. However as soon as my friend reached for the door this innocent looking lady not wearing a Regal Uniform asked for our IDs. So we dispersed to other movies. One of my friends ironically walked right into another R movie and wasn't asked to show her Id. She then later texted us saying the lady was gone about 30 minutes into the movie. Another funny thing is that two of our friends went in earlier to grab seats and weren't asked to give their Id's.
However I still got in early enough to understand what was going on. Seth Rogen plays Dale Denton, a twenty-six year old pot head who is dating a girl still in high school. After he receives a rare kind of pot from his drug dealer, Saul Silver (James Franco), he witnesses a cop and another drug dealer commit murder. He flees leaving his roll of "Pineapple Express" at the scene. Then Dale and Saul go and run in fear of their lives because the pot can be traced back to Saul.
Needless to say this movie is one wild ride with some great laughs. I don't really know what else to say about it. Not only was the main characters (Rogen and Franco) great but the supporting cast brought in some great laughs as well. In fact I really loved Craig Robinson (of The Office fame) who played Matheson. He simply had me rolling around in my seat with laughter. Danny R. McBride also had me laughing as well. I still can't fathom how his character made it through the movie. If you have seen the movie then you know what I mean. That really just gave his character Red even more laughs. Kevin Corrigan who played Budlofsky was also funny but I often felt his moments were being a little overshadowed by Craig Robinson's character Matheson. There was only one thing that was a little unresolved in this movie however it wasn't that big of a deal to me. But I wonder what happened to Angie Anderson played by Amber Heard? Did she ever get out of the hotel room?
Also I give MAJOR props to whoever decided to put Paper Planes by MIA in the trailer. First it was a PERFECT choice for the trailer. My friend and I used to listen to that song all the time over our winter break when we weren't skiing. Although the song annoyed me then I think it has definitely grown on me now. It's sad that MIA decided to quit the music business right before her song got to be so famous. I wonder if the sudden fame will convince her to come out and make another hit song?
Also if you want to know just how good this movie is. Think Dude Where's My Car with the greatness of Superbad then you have Pineapple Express!
