The Dark Knight... is certainly DARK!

So sadly it took my awhile to post this up and not on the blog I wish to have posted it on! I saw The Dark Knight on July 18 (its premiere date). I am actually going to see it again with my friends on Saturday night. As well as the movie Hancock... don't ask me why I have put off seeing a lot of summer movies.

The Dark Knight was receiving a lot of buzz because of Heath Ledger's performance of The Joker. After all the late actor died just this January in his NYC apartment. I still remember checking the celeb news on People.com that day. I check the news on their everyday and I just got home from school and play rehearsal. I remember like seeing it on the computer screen and my face just fell. I immediately ran and told my mom. I couldn't believe an actor that was like apart of my generation was gone. It was such a sad day. Ever since I could not wait to see this movie. Especially when the trailer dropped a little before his death. Cause you could tell then that there was gonna be a showdown between Ledger and Nicholson.

Jack Nicholson definitely set the bar for the character. He made The Joker character. Although I will say that he was definitely more comical. I think that's what made his Joker so great was that he didn't need to act evil. The humor just came off as a sickening/heartless murder.

Heath Ledger PERFECTED the Joker. He made him so incredibly sickening evil. You would just sit there and think "How in the world could a person be that heartless?" You definitely weren't looking at Heath Ledger. You were staring straight at the Joker. Heath just disappeared into that role. His voice was different and his laugh (well how do you even describe THAT LAUGH). Listening to him speak it sounded like you were listening to a serial killer. With the way he would say things were so heartless and sickening. Like this one scene where he was talking with Detective Stevens.

The Joker: I want...I want my phone call. I want my phone call.
Detective Stephens: That's nice.
The Joker: How many of your friends have I killed?
Detective Stephens: I'm a twenty year man. I can tell the difference between punks who need a little lesson in manners... and the freaks like you who would just enjoy it. [pause] and you've killed six of my friends.
The Joker: [faking interest, mouths "six"]
The Joker: Do you wanna know why I use a knife? Guns are too quick. You can't savor all the... little... emotions. In... you see, in their last moments, people show you who they really are. So in a way, I know your friends better than you ever did. Would you like to know which of them were cowards?

I remember seeing this scene on the screen and just cringing at that last line. I can tell you that in the hundreds and hundreds of films I have seen not one has made me feel that much emotion with just listening to a single line. Never before have I sat there and just thought "OMG, that is just so heartless and gross." That scene just sends chills up my spine.

So I have to say that Heath Ledger DEFINITELY STOLE THE SHOW. Hands down... he deserves the Oscar. Unfortunately we are so early on for awards season. He might get the nomination but I don't know about a win. It depends on what other actors pull out in their roles more in December-February.

I will say that when it comes between choosing between Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger as the best Joker. I choose Heath Ledger. Jack Nicholson did a great job but you can still feel bits of him in the role. Like Jack's laugh.... sometimes sounded like the Joker but at other times like Jack Nicholson. He was extremely funny and at times a villain. But Heath's version was a villain and had his moment were he still remained a villain and was utterly hysterically funny. Other times Heath's funny parts were very subtle.

BACK TO THE MOVIE THOUGH

The Dark Knight definitely was a step up from Batman Begins. In fact I wouldn't even call it a step more like a leap. The was a lot more action sequences and the characters deepened. The only two I didn't really like was Maggie and Aaron... aka Rachel Dawes and Harvey Dent/ Two Face. Maybe it was that I just hate when actors and actresses drop out of being in a sequel and someone new is brought in. I don't know why but I just didn't like Maggie that much as Rachel. Don't get my wrong though she is very talented and I have liked her in other movies like Mona Lisa Smile and Sherrybaby. However for some reason I just didn't care to much for her. However I hated how her character ended up. That made me beyond mad. As for Aaron Eckheart... I just don't think he really tapped into the character of Two Face. He was decent as Harvey Dent. But I just didn't think that his seeking revenge was all that sincere. He just came off as Harvey Dent with half his face burned off and that he was mad. He didn't seem to really like disappear into the persona of a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde type. Now I think Tommy Lee Jones did a better job as Two Face in Batman Forever. And I find that a little sad to say Aaron couldn't really succeed in my mind... with the character.

As for Christian Bale... he was amazing all over again. I think its sad he is being a little overshadowed by Heath. I think he is most certainly my favorite Batman. He made Batman seem a little more dark than the others did. I would say more but I am so tired... maybe I will write more later.
